ALL ELEVEN EAST BRUNSWICK SCHOOLS IN TOP 10% OF ALL
NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS IN THE NJ ARTS EDUCATION CENSUS

The widely anticipated report Keeping the Promise - Arts Education for Every Child: The Distance Traveled - The Journey Remaining was released May 10, 2012 at the historic Patriots Theater in the War Memorial in Trenton. This is the follow-up study to the 2006 New Jersey Arts Education Census report WIthin Our Power. The New Jersey Arts Education Census Project (NJAECP) is a partnership of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the New Jersey Department of Education, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation and Quadrant Arts Education Research

All eleven of East Brunswick's schools placed in the top 10% of all New Jersey Schools and our District Factor Group (DFG). Data measured included diversity and quantity of course offerings in Music, Art, Theatre Arts, and Dance, as well as budgeting, teacher/student ratio, enrollment, and community involvement.

To see East Brunswick's results and to compare them to other schools you are invited to click on http://digportfolio.com/njarts/

Congratulations to students, parents, teachers, and educational leaders for believing in
the power of Arts Education!

Tickets are $12.00 for Adults and $6.00 for Students and Seniors. Purchase tickets from the box office that evening, or call the EBHS Performing Arts Department at (732) 613-6969 for more information. The related work will be featured as the spring musical, Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story!" There will be four performances in early March.

East Brunswick Public Schools in conjunction with the East Brunswick Arts Commission presents a holiday concert featuring the Central Jersey Wind Ensemble. The concert will be held on Sunday, December 9, 4:00 PM, at the East Brunswick Performing Arts Center at Hammarskjold. A special appearance by the East Brunswick Community Chorus will be included in the afternoon's festivities.

The Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company will present a dance concert for the entire 5th grade class of East Brunswick Schools on Friday morning, December 14th. Held at the East Brunswick Performing Arts Center at Hammarskjold Middle School, this concert is a culmination of the experience each child has received through a series of four lessons in the elements and principles of dance taking place within general music classes over the past month.

The Churchill Junior High School Music Department recently hosted a concert by Brazilian Big Band "Band Urbana." Approximately 300 students heard the sounds of Latin Jazz performed by this 14 piece ensemble currently touring the East Coast. The concert was sponsored by Dillon's Music of Woodbridge, NJ to kick off an new line of "step up" instruments made especially for Dillon and played by the wind players in the band. A surprise guest artist showed up to "sit in" with the band--none other than famed Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi!

West Side Storytransfers Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to modern-day New York. The love story of Romeo and Juliet becomes that of Maria and Tony. The feud between the houses of the Capulets and the Montagues is re-created in one involving two teen-age gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The famous balcony scene of the Shakespeare drama transpires on a fire-escape of an ugly New York tenement.

The East Brunswick High School Drama Club presents the Leonard Bernstein musical "West Side Story" on Fridays and Saturdays, March 8, 9, 15, 16 (7:00 PM). Congratulations on a summer of community service and professional development

Students of Ms. Donna D'Amico (EBHS Art) pose behind a special piano painting project requested by the East Brunswick Arts Commission. Read the article on this unique way to connect the members of the community to the arts.

Jennifer Sengin (EBHS Music) was the artistic director of Ithaca College Summer Music Academy Video embedded below. Students in the program made a documentary about the importance of music and how you can use music to be expressive. The song is "Brave" by Sara Barielle, and students talk about how music can make you "brave" or "courageous."

Congratulations to Lynne Elson (CJHS Theatre Arts) on being named the 2014 winning playwright with her play "A Blessed Unrest."  In keeping with the Firehouse Theatre’s (Richmond, VA) mission of promoting new work by American artists, the Festival of New American Plays began in 2002 as a way to encourage and incubate new plays by established and emerging playwrights in the USA. It has become a grassroots event with substantial involvement from the community, as hundreds of scripts submitted to the Playwriting Contest from all over the country are read by volunteer readers from the Greater-Richmond area.

Students of Antonia Germanos (HMS Art) participated in "The Memory Project" for Nicaraguan children. HMS Art students drew portraits based on photographs and helped raise $3,000 for their schooling needs.
Watch the video of the children receiving them below:

Dear Ms. Germanos and all artists,

I’m happy to let you know that over the summer your portraits were delivered to the kids at the orphanages in Nicaragua!  We made the following video to show everyone how the delivery took place, and to give you a glimpse at their reactions:

Nicaragua 2014 from Ben Schumaker on Vimeo.

Dr. Anna Braun (CJHS Music) was interviewed by the Newark Star Ledger on the importance of Arts Education in schools. Read the article from Inside NJ  Magazine here, which was based on a visit to the Churchill Pops Concert last June.

The Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company will present a dance concert for the entire 5th grade class of East Brunswick Schools on Tuesday morning, November 18th. Held at the East Brunswick Performing Arts Center at Hammarskjold Middle School, this concert is a culmination of the experience each child has received through a series of four lessons in the elements and principles of dance taking place within general music classes throughout October and November.
